FINDING CARTAS PARA EMÍLIA #3
To create the text block we chose the drum leaf / lay flat method. This method does not require the signatures to be sewn together, and at the same time provides flexibility to open the block in 180º. Something that traditional perfect binding does not allow. There is no loss of visibility to the gutter nor are there any seams interrupting the images.
And it all starts with gluing the spine. For this purpose, we used PVA glue with a neutral pH, ideal for these binding jobs. It is durable and flexible and will not damage the paper over time. It just requires us to be somewhat quick, as it fixes very quickly.
To reinforce the spine and provide greater durability, we chose to use tarlatan. This is applied in approximately 4/5 of the length of the spine. It is resistant, but does not make it difficult to open the text block.
